Removing Stains and Dry Cleaning

Sometimes a cool wash is not enough to make a shirt look like new. If your shirts have fallen victim to residue and stains, they might require more effort to bring them to former glory. Here are some tips on how to tackle the most common stains.

Perspiration and deodorant

Perspiration and deodorant stains never look good on a shirt, yet are some of the most common. To get rid of them, use a mixture of colourless dishwashing detergent and citric acid, with a little bit of cold water. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 20 minutes, rinse off and wash as instructed on the care label.

Coffee stains are common, but when taken care of immediately they should not cause any major problems. Simply rinse the stain with cold water as soon as possible. If some traces remain, pre-treat the stain with fabric detergent for half an hour before washing.

Blood stains are also best removed by rinsing. Do not forget to dab away the excess before rinsing, and make sure the water is as cold as possible - warm water will make the blood clot and fix the stain inside the fibres. Afterwards, wash as usual.

Grease stains can be dealt with by using colourless dish detergent. Put some of it on a clean cloth and rub the stain. Afterwards, wash at a high temperature, if possible, to help grease melt away.

Dealing with wine stains is easy if it is done immediately. Sprinkle some salt to soak up the liquid, and wash as usual after.

These stain removal tips are great, but they might not work wonders every time. Some stains are more stubborn than others, and may need repeated treatments or to be handed over to professionals for a dry clean.

Our shirts are dry clean safe, but we do not recommend it as a preferred care method. Professional laundry service and pressing has a much bigger impact on the environment than machine washing at home. Overpressing and the use of harsh chemicals can also cause garments to wear quicker. Only resort to dry cleaning if absolutely necessary, and your shirts will thank you by lasting longer.
